Haiti Auction '08
Auction to Benefit Haiti's People'
Each year, SPC and Dorchester Presbyterian Church sponsor and run an auction to raise money to benefit the people of Haiti. In 2008, Haiti was devastated by hurricanes that killed many and left others with nothing. This year, the combination of silent auction, live auction, special give-aways, and sales of Haitian arts and crafts raised over $8000.
The theme of this year's live auction was "Deal or no Deal." But since the budget was tight and all the proceeds were going to benefit others, the briefcase models were a little "different" than the ones you will find on the hit TV game show. The men of Dorchester Pres. sported the construction worker theme, complete with tool belts and hard hats. Some in the crowd were disappointed that the DJ missed the opportunity to have an impromptu "YMCA" sing-a-long. The SPC men, under the working name "Macho Navidad", modeled their briefcases as the Living Nativity. Some were confused when the part of Baby Jesus was played by a 3 foot tall teddy bear. But all agreed that the cast included the strangest Mary and Joseph couple in human history.
Many thanks to the volunteers from both churches, to the individuals, families, and businesses that donated items and time, and to all the auction participants who helped raise the bar for next year.
