Sunday School at Summerville Presbyterian Church

Summerville Presbyterian Church has Sunday School classes for people of all ages and preferences. We have classes for children, for the middle school youth, for the high school youth, and for the adults: old, young and young at heart! Sunday Schools classes are offered each Sunday morning from 10:00 - 11:00am. There are excellent nursery facilities and childcare available for families with children ages birth to 4 years.

Toddlers Sunday School

The Toddlers class, for ages 2 and 3 years, meets in a classroom located along the hallway between Lanneau Hall and the gym. During the next several quarters, the children will be studying a series of age-appropriate books of Bible stories, beginning with Genesis and the Creation and continuing on through the Scriptures. They did break from the series to study Palm Sunday and Easter during the season.

1st and 2nd Grade Sunday School

The 1st and 2nd grade Sunday School class meets every Sunday in the Education building. Using the Presbyterian Church USA's "We Believe" curriculum, our creative and energetic children engage in bible study with crafts, games, and various fun activities to enhance the weekly lesson. Each child receives literature to take home and share with parents, highlighting the message conveyed and suggestions for topic discussion among the family. The curriculum provides this study outline: "The spring quarter begins with the continuation of the Lenten unit on the elements of worship, followed by the Palm Sunday, Passion, and Easter narrative. A unit on the Lord's Supper, both in its biblical context and as our sacrament today, is studied. The annual theme of worship is continued with sessions on affirmations of faith and commissioning to serve. The quarter concludes with sessions on Pentecost and the new church."

3rd and 4th Grade Sunday School

Students in the 3rd and 4th grades academically meet for Sunday school in the SPC Education Building. We are studying Elements of Worship during this winter quarter using the "We Believe" curriculum of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The theme for the upcoming spring quarter will be Confessing the Faith. We have a wonderful team of teachers that take turns leading and assisting with two in the classroom each Sunday.

5th Grade Sunday School

The fifth grade Sunday school currently utilizes the Presbyterian Church (USA) We Believe curriculum - a quick-paced journey through the bible. We begin the year with Old Testament studies with units entitled The Torah; Hebrew History; Hebrew Wisdom and conclude with Prophets. The second half of the year covers the New Testament with units that include Gospels; The Early Church and Letters to the Early Church; concluding with Revelation. Each unit is divided into about five sessions which cover one or more books with sample key points touched upon along with activities for further discussion and contemplation. We try to develop a strip chart timeline to place the events in as near to chronological order as possible. Special units are included for Easter and Christmas studies. We enjoy between four and ten fifth graders in attendance each week with boys and girls evenly mixed. We welcome all 5th graders and sometimes include games as aids to study.

Middle School Sunday School

The Middle School Sunday school class welcomes all 6th through 8th graders each Sunday morning. The class has a very open atmosphere and encourages discussion and sharing among the students and advisors. The curriculum is called Grapple and is focused on discussing issues in the lives of today's youth from a Biblical perspective. The class has several hands-on group aspects as well as some voluntary online activities that tie in with the lessons that can be done at home.

High School Sunday School

The High School Sunday school class is made up of 9th through 12th graders and meets in a very relaxed setting each Sunday morning in the Christian Education building. We tend towards a discussion format that encourages open mouths, open minds, and open hearts. Utilizing a broad range of curriculum including resources from the Presbyterian Church (USA) to Simply Youth Ministries to other Scriptural-Based studies. Most classes are interactive and all of them focus on how following Jesus is relevant and central to our lives today.

Foundations Sunday School

The Foundations Sunday School Class has been created to serve those in the 18 to 35 age range, whether single, single with children, couples, or couples with children. (Note: "single" also includes those who are divorced or widowed). Our Bible studies include lessons that are Biblically based with a focus on life application. The class is an exciting new venture, having just started in 2010. We are in the process of planning activities for spiritual growth, service, fun and fellowship.

New Horizons Sunday School

This class seeks to develop and strengthen our relationship with the Lord through direct contact with God's word. We read, study, and discuss His message to us. For the first part of 2010 we will be studying the Gospels with particular attention to the book of Luke, the study of which will continue well into the summer.. We welcome all individuals regardless of age, gender, or biblical knowledge.

Genesis Sunday School

The Genesis class focuses on an array of lessons throughout each school year. During the summer months we usually view video series followed by discussion. Our weekly lessons began this year reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families. We just completed a 2 month review of the Pentateuch. We are now beginning Joshua and are open ended in our Old Testament Survey. The Genesis class is discussion based and relies on the insight and knowledge of its members to supplement the materials prepared. It is an excellent place to learn what you don't know and share what you do. We also find great discussion amidst a community of believers who freely share differences in understanding.

Adult Discussion Sunday School

This class is the longest running adult class at our church. Many of the teachers of other classes began as members of this class. Weekly attendance varies from 15 to 30 persons, with leadership rotating among six to eight "teachers" or class leaders. Our curriculum has traditionally been "The Present Word", which is published jointly by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and several other denominations. It follows the International Sunday School Lessons, a Bible-based series. The class leaders, rather than using a lecture approach, encourage class discussion and participation, so that we may all benefit from our common Christian experience and knowledge. We welcome anyone who wishes to join with us as we seek new ways to follow and worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For March through May, the topic is “Teachings on Community” based on Jonah, Ruth, and parts of the New Testament. June through August, the subject will be “Christian Commitment in Today’s World” based on 1 and 2 Thessalonians and Philippians.

Bible Basics Sunday School

This adult Sunday School class focuses - as the name implies - on a fundamental look at the Scriptures. We study a passage verse by verse, frequently bringing companion verses into the study to shed additional light towards understanding the original passage. The presentation is shared on a weekly rotation by several knowledgeable leaders - each with a different teaching style. The class time format, though, is always the same: a completely informal, relaxed, spontaneous discussion of the Biblical text. Any and all who wish to can comment, ask questions, agree/disagree, and express ideas. Sometimes we come to a conclusion, sometimes we don't. But we will gather the next Sunday and dig into the next passage with enthusiasm. We will be "jumping around" within the New Testament studying selected passages in John, Matthew, Colossians, and Thessalonians, among others.

Faith and Reasoning Sunday School

Yes, "Faith and Reasoning" does seem like an oxymoron, when one first confronts it. And, yes, in a way we are SPC's resident heretics. We explore the obscure and exotic Christianities, past and present. Our lessons are videos that we have gathered from our Presbytery's and Synod's resource centers, among others. Currently, we are doing an in-depth study of the history of Christianity. The videos are from the "Great Courses" series. Each of the video professors is a world-class scholar. This Sunday School class can be a humbling experience - but enlightening, too!

Seekers Sunday School

Seekers is a mixed, and sometimes mixed-up group of couples and singles, varied in age and perspective, who enjoy study, fellowship, service and social activities. Five members lead the class discussions, each with his own style, on a rotating basis. We are currently studying the Gospel of Mark and will continue studying within the New Testament over the summer. No advance preparation for class is required, and new voices and opinions are always welcome!

Spotlight on KAIROS 2007

The KAIROS Cookie Challenge is an annual event that the SPC Church Family participates in. Along with the fellowship within the church, it helps to reach a group with very special needs and show them the wonder of God's Love. Read this article about KAIROS this year.
