Sunday School

We have 13 Sunday School classes, meeting from 10 to 11 a.m. on Sunday mornings, that provide spiritual enrichment opportunities for all ages. Our teachers are enthusiastic, inspirational and dedicated. Their efforts contribute to the educational and spiritual growth of participants. We offer the following Sunday School Classes for children and youth. There are two to four teachers for each class.

  • Ages two and three
  • Children in K4 and K5
  • First and second grade
  • Third and fourth grade
  • Fifth grade
  • Middle school
  • High school
We also offer six classes for adults offering a welcoming, supportive environment for congregational growth:
  • Faith and Reasoning
  • Adult Discussion
  • Bible Basics
  • Genesis
  • Seekers
  • New Horizons
In 2008 we generated awareness of classes offered by hosting a huge Sunday School Kickoff in the gym. The kick-off included food, crafts for the kids, information tables from each of the ministry teams, group building activities, prayer and information about all of our Sunday School classes. More people attended the kick-off than in previous years.

The kick-off, called Rally Day, will be on Sundya August, 23rd this year. Please make plans to join us this year to learn about the many Sunday School offerings at SPC for the upcoming school year.

The Nursery Program

The Nursery Program provides our children with a loving and caring environment. We have three nursery rooms: Newborns through 2-years old; 3- and 4-year olds; K-4 and K-5. (We have Sunday School classes for ages three through K-5; but the nursery is offered for them during worship services) We are very fortunate to have nearly 10 years of combined service from the following dedicated nursery staff. Both of our older groups have Sunday School each week consisting of crafts, games, music and bible stories.

JoyKids

In 2008, we had 68 children registered for this 10-week program, with 55 children regularly attending. The Augsburg course of study focused on Jesus' miracles, as revealed in several Gospel passages. The children prepared Easter crafts and hand delivered them to our friends at the Presbyterian Village, where children also participated in an Easter egg hunt. Fourth and fifth graders visited Laurel Street Park, Cypress Gardens and the Palmetto House.

Vacation Bible School

We held VBS in late June 2008, with the theme "Beach Party - Surfin' Through the Scriptures." Eighty children attend (57 SPC members and 23 non-members), with 56 adult and youth volunteers helping. The children were visited each day by different biblical characters (Gideon and David, for example). There was a "beach party" on Thursday evening and an open house for families.

This year, the VBS theme is camping and we will be using the Camp E.D.G.E. curriculum. Click here to find out more about VBS 2009 and Camp E.D.G.E.

God and Me

This program is the first in the "God and Country" series and is designed for children in first through third grades. The program's objective is to help young people grow in their understanding of the Christian faith and then to turn that faith into service to others After five weeks' study, the students present their work to the pastor for final approval. The program works with the "Adult Mentor Program" which was led by parents who have children enrolled in "God and Me". It is an intentional program designed to bring children and parents together to share and grow in their Christian faith.

Other Programs

Children to the Table

This class was offered in the fall of 2008 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade who wanted to learn more about Communion. Most children take the class prior to taking Communion for the very first time. Seven children (each with a parent/grandparent) attended the class.

College Conference

In 2008, two of our college students experienced SPC's first participation with the College Conference at Montreat. Four SPC college students will attend the four-day session in 2009.

Biscuits and the Bible

This weekly discussion and prayer group for women is held on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 am in the Dorchester Room. Contemporary Christian authors and the Bible are used for the study.
