Finance Ministry Team

The duties of the Finance Ministry Team include:

  • Conducting an annual all-member stewardship campaign
  • Receiving budget requests from church ministry teams
  • Preparing a church budget that meets fiscal needs and is funded through pledges and other donations
  • Monitoring revenue and expenses throughout the year
  • Monitoring all church funds
  • Working with and evaluating the work of the church financial assistant
  • Initiating an annual audit of the church's finances, making necessary corrections per the audit.

2008 Annual Report

In 2008, Summerville Presbyterian Church managed to hold total expenses to $578,663 versus a budget of $623,477. It is a testament to the fiscal responsibility of all of our ministry teams that they were able to "tighten their belts" in these uncertain economic times to the tune of nearly $50,000 saved. Hopefully, such measures will not be required for 2009. The Session passed a 2009 budget of $649,975, which represents a four-percent increase over the 2008 budget. The 2009 budget also includes funding for the proposed associate pastor position. The 2009 budget, while ambitious, is imminently achievable.

Ministry Team Goals for 2009

2009 promises to be a challenging year, as we will be hiring a new financial staff person, establishing stronger internal controls and periodic audit procedures, and continuing to recover from the substantial theft loss that surfaced at the end of 2008. Our Ministry Team is committed to achieving these goals, and meeting or exceeding budget. With the continued support of our members, we will be able to put the problems of the past behind us and accomplish many exciting things in 2009!

In 2009, the Finance Ministry Team will:

  • Establish internal audit committee to assess financial controls and periodic audit procedures.
  • Redefine the role of treasurer so that position is more engaged in day-to-day financial affairs.
  • Increase mission budget as a percent of the total, from current 3.23 percent. This excludes General Benevolences to Presbytery, which make the current amount 11.23 percent.
