Misson & Benevolence Ministry

Our mission at Summerville Presbyterian Church is to serve as instructed by Jesus, to go into the world and carry on the Lord's work by serving God's people everywhere. We are directed as a church by God to: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, house the homeless, heal the sick and to teach in His name. The Mission Ministry Team works to provide donations and volunteers, from our congregation and congregational friends, to support various mission programs at the local, state, national and international levels.

Local Missions

  • In our work with the Habitat for Humanity's Apostle's Build in 2008, the Mission Ministry Team provided volunteers one Saturday each month and worked with 11 other churches to build a home for a deserving family in Summerville.
  • In 2008, our annual Thanksgiving Basket project, in cooperation with three area churches, provided food baskets for 150 needy families in the Summerville area.
  • American Red Cross Blood Drives are sponsored by the Mission Ministry team and held at the church on a quarterly basis for our congregation and community donors.
  • in 2008, we contributed to the needs of My Sister's House, Palmetto House, Meals on Wheels, HELP of Summerville, and Follow the Carpenter, to name a few.

South Carolina and the Nation

Twice during 2008, members and friends of our congregation, traveled to areas of our country suffering from the impact of natural disasters. These two mission trips were in cooperation with Dorchester Presbyterian Church and sent our teams to Pearlington, Mississippi, to assist in rebuilding homes and families devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

The Mission Ministry Team also supported our youth in their participation in two summer mission trips and sponsored these special offerings in 2008:

  • Thanksgiving Offering for the Thornwell Home and School
  • Joy Gift Offering, to fund students at traditionally black colleges and retired Presbyterian ministers
  • One Great Hour of Sharing, to fund mission work worldwide
  • Peacemaking Offering, to fund mission and peacemaking work worldwide
  • Mother's Day Offering, to benefit the residents at the SC Presbyterian Homes

International Missions

In 2008, Summerville Presbyterian Church helped to support two missionaries abroad: Rev. and Mrs. Michael Sivalee in Brazil and Dr. and Mrs. Daniell Turk in Madagascar.

In 2008, Mission Ministry Team also:

  • Supported Water Missions International with an annual donation;
  • Gave Love Offerings to a member of the Christian Athletes in Action in Turkey and to a member of the Hunger Coalition in Sri Lanka.

Ministry Team Goals for 2009

  • Educate our congregation concerning opportunities for service and mission in Summerville as well as outside our area.
  • Sustain our on-going programs both monetarily and through the increased interest and knowledge of our congregation.
  • Encourage every family to become involved in at least one mission activity each year.
  • Increase our annual giving to mission work to 10 percent of our church budget.
  • Involve more SPC youth in intergenerational mission work.
