  • Replaced the water cooler in Education Building
  • Repaired or replaced HVAC equipment as needed
  • Upgraded and installed sound system equipment in several areas of the campus
  • Repaired several items in the Sanctuary including laying a vapor barrier and repairing insulation
  • Recruited and trained new bus drivers.
  • Welcomed Paula Strobel as the new bus driver coordinator
  • Upgraded the office server and added wireless networks to the campus.
  • Conducted repairs and cleaning of the exterior parts of the campus
  • Welcomed Deborah Goldich to the team to manage the online facilities calendar
  • Replaced both the RISO (duplicating) machine and the office copier with one more cost-efficient machine

None of the work completed in 2008 could have been done without the great support and efforts of our members.

Upcoming Items

Sanctuary paint project

There has been a recurring paint problem in the Sanctuary for many years. Every few years we have spent more than $15,000 to scrape, prime and repaint the interior of the Sanctuary because the paint peels off in sheets. During 2008, the Property team decided to conduct an in-depth investigation of this problem before investing in painting again. After consulting with several experts, we learned that the exceptionally high moisture content in the Sanctuary is causing the paint to peel. To counteract the moisture, before we paint again, we have laid down a moisture barrier under the sanctuary ($200), repaired the insulation under the floor (a minor expense), re-insulated the ceiling ($2,000) and installed dehumidifiers in the A/C system ($8,500 for two units). Once this work has been completed and the plaster is allowed to dry out for at least two weeks, a painting contractor will scrape, sand, prime and paint the interior of the Sanctuary (estimated cost $15,000). Property team members have provided the labor for the first two steps.

Playground equipment project

The Property team dismantled and removed the existing playground equipment, which had been in place for 11 years. The equipment was beyond economical repair. We turned over the selection of replacement playground equipment to the Christian Education Ministry Team. Property will help install the new playground equipment once it is purchased. We expect that the cost will exceed $5,000.

Parking lot expansion

The Property team is looking into the feasibility of filling in the remaining portion of the ditch and paving the parking area behind the gym. At the close of 2008, we were waiting on the Town of Summerville to provide the cost of materials required to close the ditch and the amount of fill needed to do this work. We believe we can add 10 to 12 new parking spaces.

Trash can enclosure

The Property team plans to build a trash can enclosure across the drive from the kitchen. In 2008, the trash cans were moved from the enclosure immediately by the kitchen door because they were blocking the air flow to the A/C condensers that service the gym. At the end of the year, the trash cans were lined up in front of the fence and needed to be moved to an enclosed area on a concrete pad. The estimated cost for this project is $1,500.
