Music Program

Summerville Presbyterian has a long and fine musical tradition. It seeks to offer through it various choirs an opportunity to serve, worship and grow as Christians.

Personal Expression: Participation in a choir provides a channel for self-expression for those "with a song in their heart." Often when words fail, music can more fully express our deepest feelings.

Education: Participation in a choir can be a learning experience. Members can expand their knowledge of the art of singing, literature, theology and of the Bible. It nurtures one's Christian, cultural and intellectual life.

Fellowship: Although choir members are of varied interests, they share a common bond through music. This bond serves as a foundation for many new and lasting friendships.

Evangelism: Those with musical interest and abilities can, fulfill their stewardship obligations of time and talent by serving God and His people through singing. Our choirs lead God's people in worship each week.

Chancel Choir (ages 16+)

This choir of adults, college-age and youth prepares music for the 11:15 am service. No formal audition is required but a sincere commitment to service is necessary. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm each week. Special music is prepared each week and for seasonal celebrations. Anthems include music from a broad spectrum of periods and styles.

Children's Choir (ages K to 5th grade)

When better to educate than in the formative years? Children are taught basic musical terms and skills. They learn simple choruses, great hymns of the church, and traditional service music (Doxology, etc.)

Handbell Choir (all ages)

The bell has called Christians to worship for centuries. Our four octave set of Handbells enables members to continue that ancient tradition. Ringing bells requires the ability to know right from left and count up to 6, and a deep sense of cooperation. Members must work as a single unit if the music is to transcend the mechanics and "speak" to the listener.

Crazy for Christ (ages 13+)

This musical group of youth and adults lead us in worship on the fourth Sunday of each month. They rehearse at 6 p.m. on Tuesday nights. Through the use of voice and instrument, they offer an opportunity to join them in new hymns and styles of singing our praises as we worship and glorify our God. You are invited to join them in this ministry of worship. For more details contact the church office.
